Weekend Animal Care Assistant
Love animals? Ready to put in the work that really makes a difference?
Working at the ManxSPCA isn’t all puppy cuddles and kitten snuggles (although there are moments like that!). Behind every happy, healthy animal is a dedicated team carrying out the essential jobs that keep our rescue running every single day.
As some of our fantastic weekend team head back to university after the summer, we’re looking for enthusiastic people aged 16+ to join us on Saturdays or Sundays, helping care for the hundreds of animals that rely on us.
What does the role involve?
Every day is different, but you’ll be helping with the vital tasks that keep our animals happy, healthy and comfortable, including:
- Preparing food and feeding animals.
- Cleaning enclosures, kennels, catteries and aviaries.
- Providing enrichment and exercise.
- Emptying bedding, poo picking and keeping our site clean.
- Working outdoors in all weather – whether it’s sunshine, rain or mud!
It’s rewarding, hands-on work that gives you a real insight into animal welfare.
Is this role for you?
This opportunity is ideal for anyone considering a career working with animals. It isn’t glamorous every day, but it is incredibly worthwhile. You’ll need to be reliable, willing to get stuck in, and happy to work as part of a team.
You’ll gain experience with animals across all of our sections, including:
- Kennels
- Cattery
- Small Animals
- Aviary
You’ll also learn about the journey of both pets and wildlife that come into our care, from admission through to rehabilitation or finding their forever home.
Full training will be provided in each area at a pace you’re comfortable with, and you’ll be supported by our experienced team every step of the way.
A driving licence isn’t essential, but it is an advantage, as weekend bus services (particularly on Sundays) can make travelling to and from the sanctuary difficult.
What you need to know
- Applicants must be 16 years or over.
- This is a weekend position, working either Saturday or Sunday on a monthly rota.
- You’ll need to be comfortable working with a variety of animals and carrying out physical, practical tasks.
Ready to get stuck in?
If this sounds like the opportunity for you, we’d love to hear from you.
